Hearing Aids - frequently asked questions

Why do people always want to wait to get hearing aids?

The onset of hearing loss is typically gradual. Often, the person experiencing the hearing decrease is the last person to recognize it. You may find yourself asking for frequent repetition, missing words in conversations, watching people’s faces for cues, or complaining that “everyone is mumbling.” In reality, you have been working hard to “hear” and you may find yourself very tired at the end of the day. It is not until you hear again that you will realize what you have been missing.

Do I buy 1 aid or 2?

We hear with our brains, not our ears, and it is important to get equal input to both ears. When both ears are amplified, we are better able to hear speech in background noise, to localize the source of a sound, and to hear softer sounds.

What features should I purchase?

The features you need in a hearing aid depend on your hearing loss and your lifestyle. Some of these features include: multiple programs, number of processing channels, number of microphones, noise cancellation, and direction microphones. The audiologist will present the features that will work for you.
